#9 Spartans Topple #1 Hawks

A stubborn defense and goals from captains Matthew Manton and Joseph Edet helped #9 Cayuga Community College Men's Soccer defeat #1 Mohawk Valley Community College on the road Wednesday.

The Spartans rebounded from an opening match loss to Finger Lakes Community College to earn a hard-fought 2-0 victory over the defending national champion Hawks. The Spartans also defeated the Hawks in the regular season in 2024 before falling to them in a rematch in the Region III finals.

Cayuga Coach Chris Davison said the Spartans played well and deserved the win.

"To go toe-to-toe with the best the nation has to offer and beat them on their home turf for the second year in a row shows that we haven't dropped a level from last year," said Davison.

The Spartans opened the scoring just minutes into the match, with Manton scoring off an assist from freshman Owen Steedman. In the second period, Edet added an insurance goal off an assist from Maxwell Bedford. Goalie Matthew Chitty and the Spartans' defenders held the Hawks at bay to ensure the shutout win.

Cayuga is now 1-1 on the season and opens their home schedule Wednesday, Sept. 10, against SUNY Broome. Kickoff at Falcon Park is scheduled for 5 p.m.
