Cayuga Community College Men's Soccer lost its opening match of the 2025 season on the road Saturday to Finger Lakes Community College.
The Spartans, entering the season ranked sixth nationally in preseason polls, were unable to break through the Lakers' defense, losing 2-0 in a Mid-State Athletic Conference and Region III matchup.
The Lakers put their first goal on the board just over the halfway point of the opening period with a lofted shot into the left corner of the net. The Spartans nearly responded with a header off a corner kick later in the frame, but the shot deflected off the crossbar.
The Spartans threatened several times early in the second period but failed to score. The Lakers put the final goal in the net with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
Cayuga goalie Matthew Chitty had nine saves in the contest. Freshman Matthew Twigg and sophomore captain Joseph Edet had shots on goal for the Spartans.
Cayuga is on the road again Wednesday, Sept. 3, at defending national champion and preseason #1 Mohawk Valley Community College. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
