Spartans Sweep Hawks at Falcon Park
Cayuga Community College Baseball's lineup was too much for Mohawk Valley Community College on Saturday, scoring a combined 33 runs in a home doubleheader sweep.
The Spartans erupted for 20 runs or more for the fourth time this season in the opening 22-8 win against the Hawks, then followed that up with an 11-3 win in the second game. Cayuga is now 26-10 on the season and 16-2 in East Division play.
Mohawk Valley took an early lead in the opener with three runs in the first inning, but Cayuga responded with eight runs in the bottom of the inning. Tyler Black, Isaac Allison and Lewis Huang drove-in runs early in the inning, then Jeremy Recio cleared the bases with a three-run double. Huang hit a three-run double in the second inning, then six Spartans drove-in runs in a seven-run third.
Jakson Ross, Ben Hatfield and Allison scored three times each, Huang had six RBI, and Recio and Chase Mascelli had three RBI each. Ashtyn Traugott-Knoll threw four innings for the win.
Neither team scored early in the second game before Cayuga broke through in the fourth inning for seven runs. Alejandro Diaz singled home the first run, then Ross and Allison hit two-run singles and Eathen Yoon and Tristan Sierra had RBI hits. They added four more in the sixth, including three on Benjamin Hatfield's homer to left field.
Yoon and Hatfield each had two hits in the game, with Hatfield and Diaz both scoring twice. Kyle Peryer earned the win for Cayuga, throwing four-plus innings and striking out six.
Cayuga is on the road Tuesday, April 21, against Herkimer College. The games will be played in Little Falls. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
