Gordon’s No-Hitter Leads Spartans in Sweep
Cayuga Community College Baseball's Dylan Gordon fired a no-hitter in the opening contest against SUNY Broome on Thursday, the first no-hitter for the Spartans since 2022.
The Spartans' lineup backed Gordon with more than enough run support, scoring five times in the second inning on their way to a 10-0 win. Cayuga made it a season sweep of the Hornets with a 21-2 win in the second game, the third time this year they've scored 20 runs or more.
Cayuga has now won eight straight and is 18-6 on the season and 10-0 in East Division play.
Gordon dominated the Hornets' lineup, striking out four and walking three, while the Spartans played error-free defense behind him. None of the Hornets' baserunners reached second base in the game.
The Spartans' lineup batted around in the second inning, with Chase Mascelli's force-out bringing in Joshua Lightburn to open the scoring. Run-scoring hits from Jakson Ross, Tyler Black and Eathen Yoon followed to stake the Spartans to a five-run lead. They added runs in the third and fourth on sacrifice flies from Ross and Mascelli, then closed the scoring in the fifth with two more runs.
Ross, Yoon, and Lewis Huang had two hits. Black, Huang and Jeremy Recio each scored twice, with Black driving in three runs and Ross and Mascelli driving in two.
Trailing by a run early in the second game, the Spartans responded with 10 runs in the bottom of the first. The first eight batters of the inning scored, with Ben Hatfield, Lightburn and Huang hitting run-scoring singles. Cayuga added seven more runs in the third inning, with Emilio Turco hitting a two-run single and Isaac Allison and Wilfredo Paulino also driving in runs.
Black scored three runs and drove-in two, and Ross and Huang each scored three times. Lightburn had two hits, scored twice and drove-in two.
The Spartans are back home to host Onondaga Community College on Friday, April 3. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 5 p.m.
