Carter Named Next Women’s Basketball Coach at Cayuga
For the first time in almost three decades, Cayuga Community College Women's Basketball will have a new head coach patrolling the sideline when they tipoff the 2025-26 season.
Former Wells College Women's Basketball Coach Doug Carter will take over Cayuga's program starting with the coming season, bringing more than two decades' coaching experience to the Spartans. Former head coach Jim Alberici, who piloted Cayuga's program for 27 seasons, retired earlier this summer.
Carter brings a wealth of experience to Cayuga, including coaching stops at colleges and universities at the NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA levels. He's ready to hit the court running for the Spartans.
"I'm incredibly excited for the opportunity to lead the Spartans' program. The College offers a great education with outstanding faculty and academic programs that prepare students to transfer or enter the workforce. It's my goal to help our student-athletes succeed in the classroom, on the court, and in whatever steps they take after graduating," said Carter.
Cayuga Athletic Director John Rizzo said Carter's more than 20 years of experience coaching, including a record of improving programs, will benefit the Spartans.
"Doug's passion for the sport and his drive for our student-athletes to be successful excites me for the future of our program," said Rizzo. "He's coached at multiple levels of college basketball, including time spent as a head coach with Division II, Division III, and NJCAA programs. He has a record of improving programs when he steps on-campus, including setting school records for season wins four times."
A veteran with a Master of Liberal Arts, Carter started his basketball coaching career as a graduate assistant coach with Lock Haven University in 2000 before becoming an assistant coach for the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in 2002.
Carter's first head coaching position was with the Community College of Allegheny County-South, where he led the softball and women's basketball programs. His basketball teams twice set program records in wins from 2005 to 2007.
He went on to lead programs at University of Virginia's College at Wise, University of Maine at Presque Isle, and Wells College. He also served as an assistant coach at St. Francis University in Pennsylvania and Fresno Pacific University, among other colleges.
Carter is taking over a Spartans' program that finished 11-15 in 2024-25 and earned a road postseason victory over Corning Community College in the Region III playoffs.
