Spartans Earn 4th Conference Title
Cayuga Community College Baseball captured its fourth conference title in five seasons this spring, edging out runner-up Onondaga Community College by just a few percentage points.
The Spartans finished 31-19 overall and earned their second straight Mid-State Athletic Conference crown with a 14-4 mark. They also won the conference in 2022 and 2023 and were the runner-up in 2024.
Along with the conference title, so far this season Cayuga has tied a program-best mark with 31 wins and set new program records in runs scored (447), home runs (24), and on-base percentage (.472).
At the plate Cayuga has averaged close to nine runs per game and had nine Spartans with at least 100 at-bats who batted .300 or better, led by Tyler Black (.423 average), Chase Mascelli (.398), Jeremy Recio (.396) and Eathen Yoon (.393). Black led the team in RBI with 63, Recio in homers with 6, and sophomore leadoff hitter Jakson Ross with 63 runs scored and an on-base percentage of .516. Five Spartans had an on-base percentage better than .500.
On the mound, seven Spartans threw at least 30 innings this season, led by sophomore Dylan Gordon's 40 2/3 innings pitched. Gordon also led the team with 10 games started, and four members of the rotation — Jancarlos Rodriguez, Jack Walters, Ashtyn Traugott-Knoll and Gordon — have at least four wins, led by Rodriguez's six. Traugott-Knoll led the team in strikeouts with 34 and tied with Gordon for most complete games (two). Sophomore reliever James MacLean led the team in saves with three and appearances with 19.
The Spartans finished third in Region III's East Division with a 20-8 mark in divisional play. They open the regional postseason this weekend with a best-of-three series at Erie Community College (29-23, 18-10), the second-place finisher in the West Division. The teams split a doubleheader earlier this season at Falcon Park.
The teams play a doubleheader at Erie on Saturday, May 9, with a deciding third game played, if necessary, on Sunday. First pitch Saturday is scheduled for 12 p.m.
The series winner advances to the Region III Final Four, which starts Thursday, May 14, at Falcon Park.
