Spartans Baseball Ties Program Wins Record

Cayuga Community College Baseball tied a program-best win total this season with their 14-7 road victory over Finger Lakes Community College on Monday.
 
In their final game of the regular season, the Spartans' lineup exploded for 13 hits in the win, including seven extra-base hits. Cayuga lost the first game 6-5 to the Lakers.
 
Cayuga ends the regular season 31-19, with a 20-8 mark in East Division play and a 14-4 record in the Mid-State Athletic Conference. The Spartans await the official announcement of their opening round opponent in the Region III playoffs.
 
"The players deserve the credit for our record and their performance this season. They took ownership in the off-season, put in the work with our great coaching staff, and it's paid off so far. We're going to keep working hard going into the postseason," said Coach John Rizzo.
 
The Spartans and Lakers traded the lead back and forth throughout the first game, with Cayuga opening the scoring in the first when Jakson Ross scored on a forceout and Jeremy Recio scored on a Tyler Black double. Recio smashed a two-run homer in the third inning to put Cayuga back in front 4-3, then Ross scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 5 in the fifth. Neither team scored again until the Lakers hit a walk-off homer to lead off the bottom of the seventh.
 
Recio and Mascelli both had two hits, with Recio scoring twice and driving in two and Mascelli adding a run and RBI. Ross scored twice and Black had an RBI.
 
Cayuga's lineup dominated the second game. The Spartans broke a 1-1 tie in the third with six runs, with Eathen Yoon doubling home two runners and Tristan Sierra, Ben Hatfield, Lewis Huang and Ross also driving in runs. Cayuga added five more in the sixth inning, including two on Black's fourth homer of the season.
 
Black had two hits, three runs and three RBI, and Sierra had three hits, two runs and two RBI. Recio, Yoon and Hatfield had two hits, and Recio and Mascelli each scored twice. Yoon and Hatfield also drove-in two runs. Kyle Peryer earned the win, striking out two in five innings.
 
The opening round of the Region III playoffs are scheduled to start Saturday, May 9. The regional final four is scheduled to start Thursday, May 14, hosted at Falcon Park.
