Four-Run Sixth Gives Spartans Win
Cayuga Community College Baseball broke open a tie game with four runs in the sixth inning to earn a win against Jefferson Community College Saturday at Falcon Park.
After falling behind early and losing the opener 10-7, the Spartans salvaged a split with the Cannoneers with a 6-3 win in the second game. Cayuga is now 29-17 on the season and 19-7 in the Region III East Division.
The teams traded single-run first innings before the Cannoneers scored eight in the third to build a 9-1 lead. Cayuga cut the lead to 9-6 with a five-run fourth inning, including RBI hits by Jakson Ross, Jeremy Recio and Tyler Black, then added another run in the fifth with Chase Mascelli scored on a wild pitch.
Black, Mascelli and Eathen Yoon had two hits and a run scored, with Black and Yoon each driving in a run. Ross scored twice and had an RBI, and Recio scored once and had an RBI.
Pitchers from both teams dominated the early innings of the second game, with Jancarlos Rodriguez holding Jefferson to one run in five innings for the Spartans. Cayuga took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Mascelli singled home Recio and Joshua Lightburn, then broke up a 2-2 tie in the sixth. Four straight singles opened the inning, then pinch-hitter Yoon singled home two more runs.
Recio and Mascelli had two hits, with Recio scoring twice and Mascelli scoring once with two RBI. Black had a run and an RBI, and Lightburn scored twice.
Cayuga wraps up division play Sunday, May 3, with a doubleheader at Jefferson.
