Jeremy Recio's late-game two-run single helped Cayuga Community College Baseball hand #4 Hudson Valley Community College their first loss of the season Wednesday at Falcon Park.
With Cayuga trailing 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth, Recio smashed a 1-0 pitch through the middle of the infield, scoring Lewis Huang and Jakson Ross as the Spartans seized the lead. Reliever James MacLean retired the Vikings in order in the seventh, giving #11 Cayuga a 7-6 win over previously-undefeated Hudson Valley.
The Vikings won the earlier game Wednesday by a 12-1 final. Cayuga is now 28-12 on the season and 18-4 in East Division play.
In the opening contest, Hudson Valley took the lead in the first inning and held it the rest of the game. Cayuga scored in the sixth when Ross scored on a double by Recio. Ross, Recio, Huang, Alejandro Diaz and Tristan Sierra had hits for Cayuga.
The Vikings again claimed an early lead in the second game, this time plating three in the first inning. Cayuga responded in the third, with Huang and Diaz singling and Ross drawing a walk before Recio smashed a grand slam to right field, giving Cayuga a 4-3 lead.
After Hudson Valley reclaimed a two-run lead in the fifth inning, the Spartans rallied in the sixth. Benjamin Hatfield doubled to start the inning and Huang drew a walk. With two outs and two runners on-base, Ross lined a double down the right field line, scoring Hatfield to narrow the Vikings' lead to one and setting up Recio's go-ahead single.
Recio had two hits and six RBI in the win, with Diaz also finishing with two hits and Huang and Ross both scoring twice. Ashtyn Traugott-Knoll earned the win in relief and MacLean picked up the save.
Cayuga travels to Hudson Valley on Thursday, April 23, for another doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
