Spartans Split with Generals

Jakson Ross had two hits, two runs scored and two RBI in a 7-1 win over Herkimer on Tuesday.

Cayuga Community College Baseball rebounded from an opening loss to Herkimer College to score a road win over the Generals on Tuesday.

Cayuga dropped a 10-0 contest to start the doubleheader but responded with a 7-1 win in the second game against the Generals. Cayuga is now 27-11 on the season and 17-3 in East Division play.

The Spartans were unable to get started against the Generals in the first game, with the lineup managing three hits and the Generals scoring five runs in the first three innings to build a lead. Jeremy Recio, Eathen Yoon, and Joshua Lightburn had hits for Cayuga.

In the second game, Cayuga scored twice in the first to grab the early lead. Jakson Ross scored on Tyler Black's sacrifice fly, then Recio scored on a forceout. Spartans starting pitcher Jancarlos Rodriguez shut down the Generals' lineup, surrendering a lone run in the fifth.

Cayuga put the game away in the top of the seventh with five runs, all scored with two outs. Lewis Huang's single scored Tristan Sierra to start the inning, then Huang and Alejandro Diaz scored on Ross's single to left field. Two batters later, Black singled home Ross and Recio for the final runs.

Rodriguez earned the win, throwing six innings and striking out five. Ross had two hits, two runs and two RBI, Recio had two hits and scored twice, and Black had three RBI to lead the Spartans' offense.

Cayuga is home Wednesday to host division-leading Hudson Valley Community College. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
