Spartans Rebound for Split

Cayuga Community College Baseball salvaged a split with Mohawk Valley Community College on Thursday after losing the opening contest to the Hawks.

The #10 Spartans struggled to get going against the Hawks, losing the opening contest 7-3 before rallying late in the second game to earn an 8-3 win. Cayuga is now 24-10 on the season and 14-2 in East Division play.

Cayuga scored an early run in the opener on Tristan Sierra's RBI double, but trailed 4-1 through the fourth inning. Jeremy Recio and Tyler Black smashed back-to-back solo homers in the fifth to cut the margin to one, but the Hawks responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Black had two hits and scored twice in the first game, and Jakson Ross and Lewis Huang also had hits for the Spartans. Jack Walters struck out four in four innings.

Cayuga trailed 2-1 in the second game before scoring seven runs in the final three innings for the win. They knotted the score in the fifth on Black's RBI single, then Recio scored on a wild pitch to give Cayuga their first lead of the game. In the seventh, Eathen Yoon homered to make it 6-2 Cayuga, then Joshua Lightburn and Alejandro Diaz hit RBI singles to close the Spartans' scoring.

Diaz had three hits and an RBI, and Recio, Black, Yoon and Sierra had two hits apiece. Sierra had two RBI, and Recio and Black scored twice. Isaac Allison earned a complete game win, striking out five.

Cayuga hosts Mohawk Valley on Saturday, April 18, at 12pm. The Spartans then host #4 Hudson Valley Community College on Sunday.
