Spartans Rally For Split with Timberwolves

A Cayuga baseball player throws a pitch.
Jack Walters threw five scoreless innings for the win Saturday against Adirondack.
Great relief work from Jack Walters and a late rally from the lineup helped Cayuga Community College Baseball earn a road split with SUNY Adirondack on Saturday.

A late rally from the Timberwolves cost the Spartans in an 8-5 opening loss, but Cayuga responded with a 9-5 win that saw them overcome a late three-run deficit. Cayuga is now 20-8 on the season and 11-1 in the East Division.

The Spartans' lineup started the first game strong with the top three batters scoring. Jeremy Recio and Tyler Black both hit RBI doubles, with Black scoring later in the first inning on Ben Hatfield's sacrifice fly. Trailing 4-3 in the fourth, the Spartans reclaimed the lead when Chase Mascelli scored on a Recio sacrifice fly and Jakson Ross scored on a single by Black. Adirondack scored four in the bottom of the sixth, though, for the deciding margin.

Black had three hits and two RBI, with Recio also adding two RBI. Ross scored twice and had two stolen bases.

Cayuga fell behind 5-0 early in the second game, but Walters started the third inning and held the Timberwolves scoreless the rest of the game. The Spartans chipped away at Adirondack's lead in the third, with Mascelli scoring on a sacrifice fly from Black and Recio scoring on a double by Eathen Yoon.

The Spartans still trailed 5-2 in the sixth when they crossed the plate six times to take their first lead of the game. Cayuga loaded the bases and scored runs on a fielder's choice and Adirondack throwing error. Recio then smashed a two-run double followed by Black's two-run single to take an 8-5 lead. They added an insurance run in the seventh on Mascelli's sacrifice fly.

Walters threw five scoreless innings for the win, striking out five. Recio had two hits, two runs and two RBI, Black drove-in three runs, Yoon and Mascelli had two hits, and Hatfield and Mascelli both scored twice.

Cayuga is on the road Tuesday, April 7, at Herkimer College. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
