Spartans Smash 5 Homers in Sweep

Cayuga Community College Baseball's lineup erupted for 23 runs in an opening win over Fulton-Montgomery Community College on Thursday, then rallied late in the second game for an extra innings win to complete the sweep.
 
The Spartans played long ball in the opener, smashing five homers in the 23-3 win, including grand slams from Lewis Huang and Emilio Turco. Cayuga's bullpen took centerstage in the second contest, holding the Raiders at bay while the Spartans rallied late to force extras before coming away with a 7-2 win in nine innings.
 
Cayuga's lineup and starting pitcher Dylan Gordon dominated the first game. In the first inning Tyler Black blasted the first of the Spartans' five homers, with Ben Hatfield and Jeremy Recio adding two-run homers in the third and fourth, respectively. Cayuga ended the game in the fifth with a 15-run inning, highlighted by Huang's and Turco's grand slams.
 
Recio scored four times and had three RBI, Huang had three hits and scored twice, Black had four RBI, Eathen Yoon had two RBI and Chase Mascelli scored three runs. Gordon earned the win, allowing two earned runs in four innings while striking out four.
 
The Raiders took the early lead in the second game, scoring twice in the first inning. Cayuga's bullpen took over in the third inning, with Elijah Blas, Jancarlos Rodriguez and James MacLean combining to hold the Raiders scoreless the rest of the game. The Spartans cut the margin to 2-1 on Yoon's RBI single in the fourth inning, but trailed by the same score in the seventh.
 
With two outs and no one on-base in the seventh, Hatfield doubled then scored on Joshua Lightburn's triple to tie the game. In the ninth, pinch runner Isaac Allison scored on a wild pitch to give Cayuga its first lead before they added four more runs in the inning.
 
Jakson Ross, Recio, Yoon and Lightburn all had two hits in the game, with Ross driving in two runs and Recio hitting two triples. Rodriguez earned the win, throwing four innings and striking out five.
 
Cayuga is on the road Sunday, March 29, at SUNY Broome. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
