In their fourth straight doubleheader against a nationally-ranked team, Cayuga Community College Baseball overcame a strong Genesee Community College squad for a pair of Mid-State Athletic Conference (MSAC) wins at Falcon Park on Thursday.
After smashing 15 hits in a 9-2 win in the opener, the Spartans rallied from two deficits for a thrilling 9-8 triumph in the second contest against the #15 Cougars. The Spartans are now 4-4 on the season.
Cayuga took control of the opener right away, with Dylan Gordon shutting down the Cougars' lineup while the Spartans scored four in the first. Ben Hatfield, Tristan Sierra and Joshua Lightburn all had run-scoring singles in the inning. Cayuga followed that up with another run in the second on a sacrifice by Jakson Ross before tacking on three more in the fourth, including two on another Lightburn single.
That was more than enough for Gordon, who threw five innings, allowing one unearned run and two hits with three strikeouts. Jack Walters threw the final two innings, striking out three with one unearned run. The lineup finished with 15 hits, with Jeremy Recio, Tyler Black, Hatfield, Sierra and Lightburn all finishing with at least two hits. Lightburn had four RBI, and Hatfield had two RBI and scored twice.
The Cougars built an early 4-1 lead in the second game before Cayuga rallied with six runs in the fifth. The Spartans batted around in the inning, with Black doubling home Ross to open the scoring and Ross ending the scoring later in the inning with a two-run single. Genesee fought back to take the lead in the sixth before Cayuga tied it in the bottom half of the inning on a bases-loaded walk by Sierra. Hatfield scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch with two outs later in the inning.
Ross and Lightburn both had two hits, and Recio, Black and Eathen Yoon had doubles. Ross scored twice and drove-in two runs, and Sierra also had two RBI. Seven different Spartans scored in the game. James MacLean earned the win in relief.
Cayuga is back at Falcon Park on Friday for another MSAC doubleheader, this time against Tompkins Cortland Community College. First pitch is scheduled for 12pm.
