After opening the season with eight straight road matches, Cayuga Community College Volleyball opened its home stand with three losses Saturday.
In their first three home matches of the season the Spartans fell in straight sets to Herkimer College and Fulton-Montgomery Community College and lost 3-1 to Mohawk Valley Community College.
Cayuga Coach Kiana Younis said the Spartans battled against good teams Saturday, and pointed out that several players were in unfamiliar positions on the court.
"We had a couple players in different positions today, but we still managed to play OK. We could have executed and communicated better, but we played as well as we could against some good teams," she said.
After losing to Herkimer to open the tournament in sets of 25-9, 25-18 and 25-6, the Spartans responded with a better match against the Mohawk Valley. Cayuga lost the opening set 25-11 but rallied to lose a close second set by a 25-23 margin. In the third set, Cayuga trailed 24-21 before scoring five straight points for the 26-24 win. The Hawks took control of the fourth set early, though, winning 25-9. Fulton-Montgomery defeated Cayuga in straight sets to end the day.
In the Herkimer match, Marrin Owens had 12 digs, seven assists and two aces, and Paige Lane had four kills. Against Mohawk Valley, Lane had 19 digs, 13 kills and four aces, and Owens had 22 assists. In the final match against Fulton-Montgomery, Zoe DeRousie had 12 digs and four kills and Owens had five assists.
The losses make the Spartans 1-10 on the season. Cayuga is back at Spartan Hall on Tuesday, September 27, to host Onondaga Community College. The match starts at 6 p.m.
