Spartans Lose 3 at JCC Tourney
Cayuga Community College Spartans Volleyball fought hard but ultimately lost three matches Saturday at the Jefferson Community College pod tournament.
The Spartans lost by a 3-0 margin in matches against Finger Lakes, Monroe and Genesee Community Colleges. The losses drop Cayuga to 1-6 on the season.
Cayuga Coach Kiana Younis said the team struggled in the first two matches before rebounding with a solid effort to close the day against Genesee.
"We didn't play as well as we could have against Finger Lakes and Monroe. Our roster was a little short-handed, and I think we got tired," said Younis. "But we played well against Genesee. They're a good team and we pushed them, particularly in the second set. I was really proud of our effort in that match."
Playing the Lakers for the second time in less than a week, the Spartans again fell 3-0 by scores of 25-11, 25-4 and 25-10. Marrin Owens led Cayuga with 10 digs and six assists. Their next match against the Tribunes also resulted in a 3-0 loss, with Paige Lane leading the team with four aces, Owens tallying a team-high nine assists, and Cassie Nolte registering 16 digs and seven kills.
The Spartans rallied with a strong match against Genesee but still lost in straight sets, 25-21, 29-27 and 25-15. Owens had 16 assists, Meagan Fatcheric had 13 digs, Lane had eight kills and Nolte had four aces.
Cayuga is back on the road Thursday for a rematch with Genesee at 6 p.m.
