Spartans Complete Sweep of Twins
Cayuga Community College Baseball will take a five-game winning streak into the postseason after taking both halves of a road doubleheader Sunday at Columbia-Greene Community College.
The Spartans captured wins of 12-7 and 15-1 over the Twins, completing the season sweep of their divisional opponent. Cayuga closed the regular season with a record of 26-10 and a 17-7 divisional record, good for second place in the NJCAA's Region III East Division, trailing only Herkimer.
The Spartans struck quickly in the first game, plating three in the first inning with RBI doubles from Hazel Martinez and Fernando Espinal. Cayuga tacked on runs in the third, fourth and sixth before breaking loose with five more in the top of the seventh. Caleb Delly led off the inning with his first homer of the season, Martinez drove-in two with a double and Espinal singled home Cayuga's final run.
Martinez and Espinal each finished with four hits, with Martinez scoring three runs and driving in four and Espinal driving in three. Delly, Alex Wurster, Anthony Driscoll-Sadusky, Tyler Korsky and Zach Mock each had two hits, with Driscoll-Sadusky scoring three runs and Korsky driving in two. Jordan Tharp got the win for Cayuga, allowing only one earned run in 3 1/3 innings of relief.
Cayuga took control immediately in the second game, scoring six runs in the first on singles by Martinez, Korsky, Michael Norton and a double by Phil Messina. Driscoll-Sadusky smashed a two-run homer in the second, and Derek Schumaker drove-in two more in the third with a single.
Driscoll-Sadusky finished with three RBI and four runs scored in the second game, and Wurster finished two-for-three with two doubles and three runs scored. Schumaker had three RBI, and Norton and Messina each had two RBI. Delly got the win on the mound, allowing only two hits and one run in four innings.
The Spartans will wait to find out who they play in the first round of the NJCAA Region III playoffs, scheduled to start Saturday, May 14.
