Ferris Fires One-Hitter in Sweep of Cannoneers

Cayuga Community College Baseball extended its winning streak to 13 games Thursday after taking both halves of a home doubleheader against Jefferson Community College.

Starting pitcher Keegan Ferris threw a one-hitter in the Spartans' 15-0 win in the first game, then Cayuga broke a 5-5 tie in the second game to capture a 10-5 win. The Spartans are now 21-5 on the season and 12-2 in divisional play.

The Spartans took an early 2-0 lead in the first game on a Michael Norton single, then broke the game open with a six-run second inning, including a grand slam by Hazel Martinez. The Spartans scored six more in the third, with Martinez and Tyler Korsky driving in runs.

Martinez led Cayuga at the plate, going three-for-three with three runs and five RBI. Korsky and Fernando Espinal each scored two runs, and Norton and Phil Messina had two RBI. Ferris took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, ultimately allowing only an infield single while striking out seven.

Cayuga again took an early lead in the second game, scoring runs in the first inning on a Korsky double and a Norton ground out. Jefferson came back to tie the game at five, but Cayuga plated three in the fifth on a Cannoneers' error and sacrifices by Tyler Ziemak and Derek Schumaker before scoring two more in the sixth.

Anthony Driscoll-Sadusky went three-for-four with two runs scored in the second game, and Martinez was two-for-two with three runs scored. Korsky had two RBI, and Alex Wurster was one-for-three with a triple and run scored.

The Spartans host a doubleheader against nationally-ranked Herkimer College on Saturday in a match-up of the top two teams in the NJCAA Region III East Division. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
